Description

You are invited to a forum about implementing equitable transit-oriented development (TOD) focusing on Midtown Exchange. 9 years after opening, this project is a shining example of equitable TOD in our region that was accomplished through the hard work of many public and private partners. It includes affordable housing, jobs, an entrepreneur incubator and a public service center, all accessible via high-frequency transit and bike/pedestrian connections.

But it surely did not come easy. To shed light on the process and results, this event will bring together speakers from Ryan Companies, Project for Pride in Living (PPL), Neighborhood Development Center (NDC), Umoja CDC and the City of Minneapolis. This panel of expert stakeholders will dissect the development from the perspective of equity in order to inform future efforts in the region. Topics will include:

  • How did this complex project come together and how has it performed over the last near-decade?
  • What lessons does Midtown Exchange hold for us as we seek to implement equitable development today?
  • How do we evaluate how “equitable” a development project is? (hint: there’s a tool for that!)

After the panel discussion and Q&A from the audience, there will be a tour through the project.

Our region has been engaged in a policy discussion about equity and equitable development for several years now. Metro Transit’s TOD Office seeks to use this event to advance that conversation by making it tangible and focused on this successful example of equitable TOD. As we shift from policy into implementation, we are fortunate to have both local examples and tools to draw upon.
